Discussion:  Startup Funding Essentials

At Profit Matters our goal is to make life a little bit easier for women entrepreneurs.  We know there is nothing easy about starting a business, so we work hard to share our collective experiences so that the next generation of women business leaders can learn from our successes and failures and have an easier time of it.

Our most frequent “ask” by Profit Matters entrepreneurs is about fundraising.  Unfortunately, our local VCs and Angel investment groups get overrun with requests like ours, so consistently decline such invitations.  Thankfully, this month we have two very smart, very cool women with very deep experience in entrepreneurial fundraising.  They have graciously agreed to share their knowledge and time with all of us.

What We’ll Cover

We could spend days on this topic, but we only have an hour, so we’ll stay focused on fundraising fundamentals.  Our goal is to set realistic expectations and educate you on the key factors that drive successful fundraising.   Raising money for your business can be intimidating.  It is hard and complex, and it requires a capital plan that maps back to your business plan. And like your business plan, your capital plan is both strategic and tactical. It includes big things like how much money to raise, when to raise it, what type of money to pursue and where to find it.  It also must address the myriad of things that prepare you for your investor engagements.  We’ll also spend a little time on financing sources and finish up by sharing some common fundraising mistakes to avoid.

This Month's Panelists

Barbara Bauer

Barbara is a former CWWK board member and one of our Profit Matters founders.  She is currently the Executive Director at Women's Leadership Foundation and was previously with the Rockies Venture Club as Executive Director, Rockies Venture Institute and the driver behind the Women’s Investor Network (WIN).  Barbara holds two degrees in physics, starting her career at Bell Labs, but eventually moved into the general technology space with Seagate and Sun.  When Barbara left the corporate world, she founded two businesses, and has dedicated herself to bettering the world through women’s entrepreneurship and corporate diversity through the board level – in the U.S. and abroad.  She has also been instrumental in educating women on how to increase their power and financial independence through business investment. Now that is seriously cool!  You can easily spot Barbara in a crowd by her colorful silk scarves, many of which were acquired through her extensive work and travel through Southeast Asia.

Rose Standifer

Rose is another startup standout – and a CWWK member. She is a seasoned Silicon Valley attorney, who has made her home here in Denver, working for the firm, Moye White LLP.  She’s dubbed herself a “startup lawyer” offering a broad range of legal services that are common to her entrepreneurial clients.  Rose has extensive experience forming new companies, structuring venture capital investments, and negotiating technology licenses. When she’s not blogging for Galvanize’s First-time Founders series or speaking on panels (like ours), you can find her acting in the role of outside general counsel to technology startups.  She regularly advises entrepreneurs and investors on formation, financing, and exit considerations.  HINT:  Those last 3 things have an impact on funding strategy.

In lieu of a fee we are always appreciative of donations to our women in tech scholarship fund.  Help a student or young professional woman in their STEM career.  Donate to the CWWK scholarship fund, today!

DONATE NOW

As always, please forward along this invitation to anyone you think may be interested in this space or thinking about presenting in the future.  While Profit Matters supports front-range women entrepreneurs, we welcome the support and attendance of all our female and male colleagues. Please help us spread the word!
